Pickering

Another nice little Yorkshire Town that gets busy at weekends, Pickering is on the south side of the Yorkshire Moors, just 8 miles east of Kirkbymoorside and about 15 miles east of Helmsley. Easy to reach from York - just drive east on the A64 and turn left on the A169 just after Malton. When we visited we found (as usual) some free street parking and took a little wander around. Lots of pretty little streets as we wandered uphill towards the castle.

Pickering Castle - a very old ruined castle from the 13th century is run by English Heritage and has an entry fee, but you can walk around outside without paying :) I can see that when I get older I will end up joining English Heritage and the National Trust and spend my retirement visiting old buildings, castles and gardens like a typical old Englishman! We enjoyed walking around the outside of the castle walls ...

Walking back another route from the castle into the town center, we passed some houses with very nice gardens.

The houses are on a road called Undercliffe which leads to Pickering train station - and here's something I'd like to do one day - the North Yorkshire Moors Railway - you can get a train from Pickering to Whitby.

We finished our little walk by buying some fish and chips in the town and sat in a little park ...

Must return again some day for the train and a wander around the antique shops .. and more fish & chips!
