Hardraw Force Waterfall

Now, the UK does not have many spectacular waterfalls. We don't have anything like a Niagara or Iguazu or Angel Falls, but ... I like waterfalls and back in my previous life in Phuket I wrote about lots of Phuket waterfalls. There are a few in the Yorkshire Dales - some bigger than others. Aysgarth is very pretty although there's no big drop. The falls at Richmond are similarly lovely, but Hardraw is the biggest in the UK with a drop of about 100 feet - and after a bit of rain it's quite a force of nature.

Located behind the Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw village about 1.5 miles north of Hawes in Wensleydale, you can park behind the Inn, and then enter via the cafe - there is an entry fee of about £2.50 per adult or £1.50 per child. Then a short walk along a path ...

Path To Hardraw Force Waterfall

The path runs along the left side of the river going upstream, but you can cross the bridge to the other side of the river.

I do recall as a kid that I went behind the waterfall .. on our recent visit we did not see anyone doing that - maybe there was too much water. if you head up the right side you can get very close to the falls ...

(above) My boy right next to the falls - you can see the path does go behind the falls. Looked very slippery with all that water falling so we did not take any risks.

Certainly worth the visit. Nearby Hawes is a place I like especially on market day (Tuesday). And if you head out of Hawes you can quickly detour to Hardraw before driving over Buttertubs pass to Swaledale. Some of my favourite UK scenery here!
